The midfielder who is valued at £36m by Transfer markt has been linked with Liverpool in the past, and it is easy to see why he has attracted the attention of the club, as well as fellow Premier League rivals, Chelsea, who are also reportedly plotting a move for his signature.
In what will be exactly a year following his departure, Liverpool are reportedly making plans to finally replace Georginio Wijnaldum in the summer transfer window later in 2022.
That is according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, who is reporting that Liverpool are interested in Aurélien Tchouaméni with a view for making a bid in the summer.
Tchouaméni’s dynamism and his ability on the ball is exceptional. His reading of the game and his defensive work rate is tailor-made for Jürgen Klopp’s gegenpressing system.
There is no doubt the French international would be capable of filling the void left behind by Wijnaldum at Anfield.
One of the best aspects about Tchouaméni is just how versatile he is at playing numerous roles in midfield.
It was an aspect highlighted by his former coach, Philippe Lucas to First Time Finish, who described him as a ‘complete’ player due to his ability to play the ‘box-to-box’ role.
Despite Lucas’ statement, Tchouaméni has predominantly played in a holding midfield position at AS Monaco. With Fabinho occupying the position at Liverpool, it would be a tough ask for the French youngster to compete with him for the role in the starting XI.
But he might not need to. After all, he has played in more advanced roles in the past and he would be capable of playing in a no.8 position, too, based on his shooting ability and distribution.
Liverpool have struggled at times this season with their midfield being too open defensively and unable to control games Tchouaméni with his defensive prowess could also fix that even in a more advanced position.
But undoubtedly one of the biggest allures in favour of a move for the French midfielder would be the ability for Klopp to deploy a formation that has reaped rewards recently, when he has been able to use it the midfield double pivot.
When both fit, Fabinho and Thiago Alcântara have often formed a double pivot in Liverpool’s midfield this season, with Thiago dropping deeper to help Liverpool retain more control in possession and avoid being exposed defensively during turnovers.
The tactical tweak made by Klopp has seen Liverpool record some of the best results of the season including a 4-1 victory over Everton, and respective 4-0 wins over Southampton and Arsenal, as well as a 3-0 victory over Leeds United.
When both have started in the double pivot together this season, Liverpool have recorded a 100 per cent record.
The arrival of Tchouaméni could ensure Klopp would not have to rely on the fitness of Thiago to use the system. Tchouaméni is tailor-made for a double pivot role alongside Fabinho, which has the making of a formidable partnership, particularly from a defensive point of view.
One would struggle to see how that duo could ever lose grip of the midfield against any opponent.
As Liverpool continue to play with a more advanced midfielder, Klopp knows he has to shift to a double pivot and create a diamond to protect the midfield being overrun as we have seen on numerous occasions this season.
For that reason, Tchouaméni is the perfect man for the club, and Liverpool should do everything in their power to ensure he ends up at Anfield rather than Stamford Bridge.
