Barcelona Are Suspecting That Ter Stegen Does Not Have Faith In The New Project At The Club Under Xavi Hernandez

Once regarded as one of the most important players of this Barça side, the German international had attained fan favourite status at Camp Nou due to his heroics between the sticks.

However, over the past months, there has been a marked decline in his performances, especially in the aftermath of the knee surgery he had to undergo in May earlier this year. The 29-year-old does not inspire confidence the way he used to in the past, while his abilities with the ball at his feet have become suspect as well.

All this has led to serious concerns within the club, while fans have also started to turn on the former Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper.

While there are some who believe that his knee injury and the subsequent surgery are the reason behind his struggles, El Nacional reports that officials at Barcelona are suspecting that ter Stegen does not have faith in the new project at the club under Xavi Hernandez and has a secret agreement in place to join Bayern Munich.

The Bundesliga champions, who also have their sights on Sergino Dest and Frenkie de Jong, have been long-term admirers of ter Stegen. With their current first-choice shot-stopper, Manuel Neuer, entering the final stages of his glittering career, the Bavarians are on the lookout for a replacement for the German legend.

And, ter Stegen has emerged as their priority to replace their club captain, with manager Julian Nagelsmann keen on signing him up next summer. Barcelona are believed to be open to offers for the ex-Gladbach ace, with the club even identifying several potential candidates as a replacement for the German custodian.

Despite his recent stuttering form, ter Stegen is a reputed goalkeeper, and his sale would help the Blaugrana generate funds they can use to invest in the squad. One of the biggest earners in the squad, getting his wages off the books would also stand to help the Catalans. Whether Bayern make a move to sign him remains to be seen.
