The Magpies have announced right-back Kieran Trippier as their first signing under the new ownership and they are in the market for further additions
Newcastle boss Howe is determined to keep his team from slipping down to the Championship as they continue to be locked in a relegation battle and a new centre-back, a striker and a centre-midfielder are all on his transfer wish list.
The Tyneside giants are continuing their recruitment drive and have contacted fellow regulation candidates Norwich over a move for their midfielder Cantwell
Norwich are open to letting the 23-year-old leave Carrow Road in the ongoing window and have informed Newcastle that they want a fee in the £15m-£20m range
However, Howe may only push to land Cantwell this month if Norwich agree to lower their asking price for him.
Cantwell has not been a fixture at Norwich in the current Premier League campaign and Howe would only ask his club to rope him in for a lower fee than that which his club are currently demanding.
The midfielder’s current deal at Norwich expires in the summer, although the club have an option to extend it for another season.
It has also emerged that Newcastle are facing competition for the Englishman as a rival Premier League club are also keen on securing his services.
