It has been claimed that the Magpies are prepared to go up to £326,000-a-week in order to sign him.
Furthermore, he will be offered £17 million as a sweetener to sign for Newcastle. Tidy work if you can get it!
Dembele has fallen down the pecking order at Barcelona. During 2021/22 he has made just three appearances and failed to register a goal contribution.
The forward has been with the Catalan giants since signing from Borussia Dortmund in 2017.
He has found the net 30 times and registered 21 assists during 121 outings for Barcelona.
It’s fair to say that it’s not quite worked for him at the Nou Camp though and Xavi looks willing to let him leave.
Newcastle are in search of a stellar signing or two when the window reopens in January.
That won’t be easy though, with the Magpies yet to win any of their 13 Premier League matches during 2021/22.Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Arsenal leaves them rooted to the foot of the table and Eddie Howe has a big task on his hands.
A substantial wage packet, however, could tempt Dembele into being part of the project at Newcastle.
The Barcelona man once received high praise from Lionel Messi who called him a ‘phenomenon when he’s on the pitch’.
Of course, the Magpies would welcome Dembele with open arms. On his day he is quality and Newcastle could do with some more options in attack.
Right now the profligacy is killing them and is ultimately shunting the club back towards the Championship.
Signing Dembele would certainly enhance the chances of survival but the link does need taking with some caution.
Will Newcastle really spend such a sum on one player’s wages when the possibility of Championship football next season looks high?
PIF are renowned for their business sense and perhaps a string of high profile loans will be targeted instead
If Newcastle do push the boat out for Dembele, however, it would be very welcome indeed.
