Newcastle United Have Agreed A Fee Of Around £12 Million With Atletico Madrid For Defender Kieran Trippier

The club tabled a formal offer for the left-back last week, an addition they hope will add momentum, both on and off the field, during their relegation fight.

An agreement has now been reached with Atletico which will see Newcastle pay an initial fee, then an additional installment in the summer, plus add-ons.

The Athletic understands that the right-back is due to travel to Tyneside for a medical tomorrow.

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe had made signing Trippier a priority in the January transfer window and the defender is expected to travel to Tyneside soon to undergo his medical.

Trippier is understood to have all but agreed to the deal himself, with the player said to be keen to return to England to be closer to his family.

The right-back is one of the four-to-six arrivals Newcastle hope to make before the end of the window as a minimum. Two centre-backs, a midfielder, a striker and a left-back remain on their wanted list.

Trippier previously played for Tottenham Hotspur and Burnley in the Premier League. He won La Liga with Atletico last season.

The 31-year-old played his final game for Atletico on Sunday, playing 90 minutes as Diego Simeone’s side beat Rayo Vallecano 2-0. In total, he made 83 appearances for Atletico after joining in 2019.
