As a Manchester United legend, he was always going to struggle to achieve that status at Stamford Bridge, in fairness. But he did himself no favours recently when commenting on the Blues’ defence.
Scholes appeared on an instalment of Gary Neville’s podcast the Overlap at a fan event. In the episode, fans were allowed to engage and debate with the former midfielder as well as Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville.
Scholes made the claim that Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool all had better defences that Thomas Tuchel’s side.
“I also don’t think you’re great defensively,” he said.
“I think [Antonio] Rudiger’s been really good but, other than that, you’ve got Thiago Silva who’s 36 or 37, Andreas Christensen’s a young player.
“Well, Liverpool have got the best centre-backs, [Manchester] City have got two great ones, I think United have got two really good ones. I think Chelsea are probably the weakest out of the top four defensively.”
It was a comment that spread quickly among Chelsea fans on social media. The ridicule has only grown louder following terrible defensive showings from United against Atalanta and Liverpool.
Now, Thiago Silva has entered the debate.
The clip resurfaced on Instagram after being posted by CFC_Globe, along with extra captions hammering home that the Blues have the best defence in Europe since Tuchel’s arrival, the club are top of the Premier League and have conceded the fewest goals.
In the replies, the Brazilian veteran popped up, giving his verdict on Scholes’ comments with a single emoji: the crying laughing face.
Already a huge fan favourite in west London, the comment from Silva will no doubt only endear him further.
