PSG Stars Showed Little Concern For Kylian Mbappe’s Contract Situation As They Celebrate His 23rd Birthday

Mbappe has long been linked with a move to Real Madrid and with his deal at the Parc des Princes currently expiring next summer, the Spanish giants could agree a free transfer ahead of next season at the start of 2022.

Yet as some of the PSG squad celebrated Mbappe’s birthday – though strike partners Lionel Messi and Neymar were not in the photo – they posed with a ‘Mbappe 2050’ shirt as they made light of the tense situation for the French club.

Among the stars present in the photo, which was posted on Juan Bernat’s story, was Sergio Ramos, Georginio Wijnaldum and Ander Herrera.

Achraf Hakimi, Rafinha, Keylor Navas, Marco Verratti and Julian Draxler were also amongst those present.

PSG sporting director Leonardo has insisted recently that the club have ‘good possibilities’ to extend the World Cup winner’s contract.

He said: ‘It’s a very special situation because we are talking about the best player in the world who is coming to the end of his contract.

‘We can say that there were times when we discussed more warmly, but that is part of building a relationship.

‘People will think that we say that because we want to prolong it but it is beyond the interest of the club.

‘At 22 years old, almost 23, Kylian has reached an incredible maturity.

‘It’s a complicated situation in the sense that we would like him to stay all his life and that we have to respect that (the family’s position). I think we still have good possibilities (to extend it). I believe in it.’

Mbappe’s contract expires at the end of the season, which means from January clubs outside France can approach to sign him on a free transfer in the summer.

Having so far refused to put pen to paper on a new deal at the Parc des Princes, he is expected to leave, with Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid, who take on PSG in the last-16 of the Champions League, thought to be leading the race for his signature.

PSG next play in Ligue 1 on Wednesday night away to Lorient, coming off the back of a French Cup win away at SC Feignies at the weekend in which Mbappe scored twice.
